Buying in Casares

The area

Casares is best known for its village, a dense cluster of white houses spilling down a hillside below a ruined Moorish castle, several kilometres inland and high above the coast. It is one of the more photographed settlements in the province and remains largely residential rather than resort.

The market, though, is on the coast. Casares Costa is the flat coastal strip below the village, and the developments there sit alongside a run of golf courses — Doña Julia, Casares Costa and, inland, the estate around Finca Cortesín. The land between them is still comparatively open, which is much of the appeal for buyers moving west to escape the density around Marbella.

Supply is genuinely limited. This is a small municipality and only a few dozen properties are typically available at any one time, so a search here is better run as a standing brief than as a browse.

Who it suits

It suits buyers who want the western coast's openness and are content to drive to a larger town for most things. Golf is the organising principle of the coastal developments, and buyers who play tend to get the most out of it.

It suits less well anyone who wants to walk to shops and restaurants from the front door, or who needs a wide choice — the catalogue here is a fraction of Estepona's, a few minutes further east.
