Mijas is the most accessible area on this list. It covers a wide stretch east of Marbella, from the coastal strip up into the hills, and the stock is weighted firmly towards apartments at prices well below the western coast.

Mijas is really three places under one name. Mijas Pueblo is the white village in the hills, a genuinely old settlement looking down over the coast. Mijas Costa is the coastal strip below it, running east from Marbella through a series of urbanisations and beach communities. Between and behind them is the inland golf country, where several courses sit in the valleys.
The coastal strip is the busiest part and where most of the market activity is. La Cala de Mijas, roughly in the middle of it, has grown from a fishing village into the strip's natural centre and retains a walkable core with a beach directly in front of it.
This is the eastern end of the coast covered here, which in practice means it is nearer Málaga and its airport than the western areas are, and correspondingly popular with buyers who travel frequently.
It suits buyers whose budget will not stretch to the western coast but who still want to be near a beach, and those buying a holiday property they will use in short stretches through the year. The apartment-heavy stock is straightforward to lock up and leave.
It suits less well buyers looking at the top of the market. There is very little here above three million euros, and searches at that level are better directed west to Benahavís, Marbella or Sotogrande.
Based on what is available in Mijas today.
The natural centre of the coastal strip, with a walkable core, a beach in front and more year-round life than the urbanisations either side.
Inland around the golf course, elevated with views back to the coast and quieter than the beachfront.
Behind the coast near the racecourse, with golf alongside and a mix of apartments and townhouses.
A coastal pocket towards the Fuengirola end, close to the beach and well served by the coastal road.
Inland in the golf valley, considerably quieter than the coast and priced accordingly.
